There are so many tennis racquet available on the market, and like any beginner, you are probably overwhelmed and even intimidated by the selection. Should you buy something ultra-light or would a heavier racquet suit you better? Are those high-tech features manufacturers rave about really worth the extra cost? The key is to get a tennis racquet that ultimately improves your performance. Don’t know where to start? Here are some factors to consider: Power vs. Control One of the first things you need to decide is whether you want a racquet that provides control, power, or a combination of both. Beginners are usually advised to use a lighter, powerful racquet that weighs 9 to 10 ounces, with an oversize head (100 square inches at least) for more power. The larger head also improves your chances hitting the ball at optimum contact. Choose a racquet with a wide beam of at least 25 millimeters so that the frame remains stiff and more powerful. Advanced players who are looking for more control will appreciate a heavier racquet with a thinner beam and a smaller head. Regular Length vs. Extra Long Regular racquets are 27 inches long, while extralong versions are 28 inches. Extra-long frames can be more powerful because it puts the contact point farther away from your body. This allows your swing to have a greater momentum. The downside? An extra-long racquet is harder to maneuver than a 27-inch frame. Open String Patters vs. Dense String Pattern There are bigger spaces between the strings in an open pattern, and this can be beneficial if you want to add more spin to your shots. A dense pattern is the better choice is you want additional control in the direction of your shots. Grip Size This is one of the best ways to determine which racquet is right for you. Hold your playing hand flat, fingers together. Take a tape measure or ruler and measure from your palm’s middle crease, up the line between your ting and middle fingers, to the tip of your ring finger. Women usually measure between 4.125 and 4.375 inches, and men between 4.375 and 4.5 inches. Junior players typically measure less than 4 inches. When in between sizes, it’s safer to go for a smaller grip that you can build up with an overwrap. A racquet with a large grip cannot be adjusted.
